Carleton Student Engineering Society

1.0       BACKGROUND AND HISTORY

Since its inception, EngFrosh has endeavored to give first year engineering students an insight into their upcoming university careers.  However, in the beginning, the emphasis was more on partying and pranks than on team building and camaraderie.  Even though we have moved past this irresponsible attitude, the old stereotypes still remain; but will not last!

In recent years, great efforts have been made to make EngFrosh a valuable tool to an engineering student’s undergraduate career.  In all respects, this goal has been attained.  Today, students that participate in EngFrosh emerge from the week with a strong network of friends to support them, as well as a taste of the university lifestyle.  But, probably the most beneficial, and often overlooked aspect of frosh week is the sense of community it develops among the engineering student body.  With over two-and-a-half thousand students, one could easily be lost in the crowd.  Fortunately, this is not the case at Carleton.  At any point, the students have a strong network of peers to rely on.  This is Carleton Engineering’s greatest triumph, with much of the groundwork laid during the first week in September - Frosh Week!

2.0              ENGFROSH 2001

            2.1 OFFICIAL POLICIES

EngFrosh 2001 is trying to eliminate old stereotypes associated with frosh week.  In lieu of this, the directors are taking great strides in order to reduce the amount of alcohol consumption during the week.  As it stands now, only two of the eight nights have events planned that include alcohol.  According to Ontario Provincial Law, anyone under the age of 19 is forbidden to drink alcohol at any EngFrosh 2001 organized event.  Measures such as armbands are put in place to ensure these individuals do not have the opportunity to purchase or consume alcohol.

A second misconception some parents and community members have about frosh weeks is the potential for the hazing of participants.  It is not the policy of EngFrosh to condone any sort of hazing within frosh week.  There are no organized rituals or events that demean or harm the first years in any way.  Upper years that participate in the week serve as mentors to the first year participants and are responsible for their safety, and as such have no intent of hazing or other such activities.[Watermark1]

            2.2 THIS YEARS EVENTS

Here is a brief description of just a few of many activities planned for EngFrosh 2001

Engineering Games

A true test of ingenuity in typical engineering fashion.  Each group is given a number of different tasks and only limited amounts of time to solve each one.  The "Games" are designed to get the first years into a problem solving state of mind while they are having fun.

Boat Race

One of the largest events of EngFrosh!  Teams build a boat from scratch and race down the Rideau Canal.  Once again, the first years must pull together as a team in order to design a "sea worthy" vessel.  The boat race draws a great amount of public attention from curious pedestrians and bicyclists that catch a glimpse of 500 students massing around the canal with some very odd creations in the water.

Market Scavenger Hunt

What's better than spending a Saturday in the Byward Market?  A Saturday in the Byward Market in which you have to put all your charm, ingenuity and resourcefulness to the test in order to call yourselves the Market Scavenger Hunt Champions.  Given a large list off unusual treasures, the groups race through the Market, sometimes trading the shirts off their backs, or even team members, to complete this truly off-the-wall scavenger hunt!

Concert

High profile and high energy.  This is a chance for the first years to relax and enjoy the beginning of their university careers.  And what a perfect opportunity to market your company!!!  Please note this event is dependent upon sufficient funding.

Charity Event

Combining the efforts of all EngFrosh 2001 participants and local companies, EngFrosh will host one massive charity event.  While helping to erase stereotypes surrounding frosh week and engineering students in general, the main purpose of this event is to illustrate an engineer's main purpose - to serve the public.  In doing so, we hope the money raised through this event will help make someone's future just a little bit brighter.

4.0       WHY SPONSOR EngFrosh 2001?

Recognizing the benefits of public support, along with the desire to create a new image for

engineering students, EngFrosh is working on community relations.  To coordinate this aspect of the week, two new positions were added to this year’s planning committee – Director of Media Relations and Charity Event Coordinator.  These individuals are working hard all summer to raise the profile of frosh week’s image.

Perhaps an even larger benefit of sponsoring EngFrosh is the chance to use EngFrosh as a weeklong advertising campaign directed at Carleton Engineering.  This gives you access to some of Canada’s brightest future engineers and, no doubt, some leaders of tomorrow.  This in itself is an opportunity that does not present itself often.

Keeping with the goals of EngFrosh, your company is also contributing to the Engineering community at Carleton as well as the future of your own company.  EngFrosh helps prepare its participants for the corporate world by teaching teamwork as a problem-solving tool.  This will no doubt be of value in their future careers, possibly with your company!  EngFrosh tries hard to realize the need of today's Professional Engineers and provide a foundation on which to build these skills.

We highly recommend you don’t let this opportunity pass you by!
