EngFrosh '98 Event Philosophy
WHY WE DO THE THINGS WE DO

Our mission statement:

EngFrosh '98 is a celebration of engineering pride, engineering ideals, and an introduction to engineering life at Carleton University.

Our theme:

The Eight Deadly Sins:
Pride, Wrath, Sloth, Greed, Lust, Envy, Gluttony, Engineering

Our philosophy:
  • Engineering at Carleton University is a program unlike any other
expect to celebrate engineering; expect to have pride

  • Engineers at Carleton University are a tight-knit community
expect a warm welcome; expect to make friends

  • Engineers at Carleton University know how to have fun
expect to be entertained; expect to let your hair down

  • Engineers at Carleton University are hard workers
expect to be challenged; expect to learn

  • Engineers at Carleton University go to class
expect a tour; expect an academic introduction

  • Engineers at Carleton University get a little wild sometimes
expect to compete; expect to stay up late

Our Ideals:
  • EngFrosh '98 is not only a social event, but also an academic orientation to engineering and the university in general.

  • EngFrosh '98 is so named because we refuse to conform to the idea that if a name has negative connotations (in the US, "Frosh" is associated with hazing) then one should change the name. We believe in changing perceptions.

  • EngFrosh '98 is engineering-student oriented. We understand that you will need to sleep in 'til noon; on most EngFrosh '98 days, nothing happens before then.

  • EngFrosh '98 is competitive. A week-long scavenger hunt (Skunt) will provide groups with many challenges to overcome. Skunt clues will lead to the location of the super-secret party.

  • EngFrosh '98 is all about communication. Each Frosh will receive three phone numbers: the group leader's cellphone, the coordinator's cellphone, and a "What's Happening" answering machine. The machine will be updated daily, and will provide information such as where to meet and what to bring, etc.

  • EngFrosh '98 is (partly) non-alcoholic. Alcohol will not be available on three of the eight days (games day, admin day, movie day). Alcohol will be available at certain times on the other days, and there will be no pressure to indulge. Events are coordinated to allow for consumption and abstention.
